Project
PROMIS is a locally-based initiative designed to save lives by offering non-invasive
ultrasound screenings to at-risk individuals. The current focus is on preventing
death from the rupture of undetected Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA), which
claim the lives of 15,000-30,000 Americans each year.
The
aorta is the main blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the
rest of the body. Sometimes part of the aorta weakens, quite often in the abdomen.
When this happens, the weakened area stretches like a balloon to accommodate
the blood flow, creating an aneurysm. If the aneurysm bursts, internal bleeding
occurs, which leads to severe shock – and quite often, death.
These
screenings are being offered at no charge to at-risk individuals.
Several
factors increase risk including those people who:
•
are smokers
•
have high blood pressure
•
have a history of heart disease
•
have atherosclerosis
•
are over age 55 (especially men)
•
are over age 50 (with a family history of aortic aneurysm)
After
completing a brief confidential questionnaire, a licensed technologist will
glide an ultrasound transducer across your abdomen. Images will be displayed
on a monitor attached to the ultrasound equipment.
The
entire screening should take 30 minutes or less. Usually, filling out the necessary
paperwork should take about 10 minutes and 15-20 minutes for the actual exam.
In
order to ensure the quality of your free ultrasound,
the following preparation
is required:
• Evening prior to the exam – no fresh fruits, caffeine or carbonated
beverages.
• After midnight – nothing to eat or drink except required medications.
• Morning of exam – no smoking, eating, drinking or gum chewing.
(Important Note for Diabetics: You may take your usual dose of insulin
and eat a light/bland meal to prevent insulin reaction.)
A
copy of your screening results will be sent to your primary care physician.
Other information regarding patient confidentiality will be provided in a Consent
Form given to you at the time of the screening.
